Tips for Sending Non-Pro Photos to Clients

(This post is mainly for freelance models)

Submitting yourself for modeling gigs often requires you to email pictures of yourself--typically headshots, comp cards or other professional images that relate to the nature/theme of the modeling gig you are trying to get. However, in some cases the client might ask you to send additional photos that are candid and not professionally taken. There are some instances where you will need to exercise good judgment and common sense to decide whether such a request is legitimate and related to the modeling gig or if it is a scammer or shady individual "fishing" for photos.

It is not uncommon for a client to ask a model to submit non professional pictures. Oftentimes this is done because they want to make sure that they know what you look like without the makeup, retouching and Photoshop tricks. The last thing they want is a person walking onto the set that looks nothing like their photo--this happens all too often in the industry. Another reason is that the client may not be able to do a face-to-face meeting with you prior to booking you for the shoot and wants to make sure they know what you look like currently so that you are recognizable on the day of the shoot.

Unfortunately, there are people that take advantage of this and pretend to be a client casting models when in reality they are just collecting images for their own personal use. If you come across a client that asks you for non pro pictures, make sure they meet the following conditions:

- The poses are basic and do not suggest anything sexually. Full body frontal, back and profile poses are fine. If the client asks you to do anything like spreading your legs, posing suggestively, etc. this is not a good sign.

- The outfit they ask you to wear should require a swimsuit as the least amount of clothing to wear in the pictures--if it is fully clothed then you won't have a problem. You should NEVER be asked to submit non professional nude, semi nude or even implied nude photos to a client. If you are a glamour model this might be an exception to the rule but then again, they should be content with your professional images.

- There might be a time when you are asked to pose in a bra and underwear (clients request this sometimes in order to see how healthy/clear your skin is as well as the shape of your body). This is where you will need to exercise your own judgment. Try asking the client if you can pose in a bikini, which shows the same amount of skin as a bra and underwear. If you are an underage model, bra and panties are a no-no. If the client is legit, they will not ask this of an underage model anyway.

When it comes to submitting these kinds of pictures to clients, think before clicking "Send" on that email. Ask yourself whether you feel comfortable sending such photos to someone you don't know. Additionally, think about the modeling gig itself and if the nature of the pictures they are asking for relate to the project. For example, I submitted myself to a modeling gig on Craigslist that was looking for models for a drug-free advertisement shoot that was supposed to be used locally on buses and local magazines. I sent my pictures and literally within less than one minute, got a reply saying I had a great look but that they needed snapshots of me...full body, front and back in bra and underwear. She said she needed the pictures so that she could see the shape of my body. That got me to thinking: what does my figure have to do with a commercial/print gig that is focused on being drug free? I Googled her email address and found out that she has posted similar gigs on Craigslist in various cities and states. That was pretty much a dead giveaway that this person wasn't really casting for any real modeling jobs and was simply collecting pictures of girls in their underwear. Yuck.

On the flip side, I submitted for a different modeling gig for an online catalog and they asked for snapshots of my face with no makeup on and a full body shot wearing a form fitting tank top, short shorts and heels. That didn't raise any red flags for me since obviously there was nothing sexual or suggestive about the poses they wanted or the outfits. I have included those pictures in this post.

So use common sense and good judgment each time a client asks you to send pictures. This is also why watermarking your images is a good habit to get into. I'll be doing a post about that very subject soon so stay tuned.

You Cannot Be a Model

...You Don't Meet the Requirements: No matter how many of us wish all shapes, sizes and heights could appear on the runway, the industry is pretty firm about what it wants--agencies included. Until those requirements change, you cannot be 5'1" and strutting down a catwalk in New York Fashion Week. Only submit yourself for the type of modeling that you meet the criteria for. There are exceptions to the rule but for now it is the majority that rule.

...You Are Not a Morning Person: If the thought of getting up before the sun makes you ill, then modeling won't be a good fit. When I say early, I mean it. There have been shoots I've done where I had to BE on location at 7am. Not only do you have to be awake, you have to perform at the top of your game. If early mornings don't work for you, then neither will maintaining a serious modeling career.

...You Don't Play Well with Others: From agencies to photographers, makeup artists and other models you must be able to get along with people from all walks of life. Never met them before? By the end of the shoot it will be as if you've known them your whole life. No one says you have to like the people you work with but being a snooty booty won't get you much work in the industry. There are enough divas out there--we don't need any more!

...You're Used to Calling the Shots: Modeling is not about "you." You are a commodity that must be able to go with the flow. If you are picky about how your hair, makeup and wardrobe is, do NOT pursue modeling. Even if you look like a train wreck, you've got to flaunt your look as if it was something you'd rock on a daily basis. There is no "I" in "Team" and the last time I checked, it isn't in the word "Model" either.

...You Can't Be on Time: Unfortunately, there are many models that do not follow this rule but I cannot stress enough the importance of learning how to be on time for all things related to modeling--this includes go-sees, castings, interviews, shoots, fashion shows, etc. Don't fall into this bad habit, even if other models are doing it and getting away with it. For every model that is late to a gig, there are many more that will arrive on time and be what the client needs.

...You Don't Know What You're Doing: We all have to start somewhere but eventually you should come to know exactly what to do once you step in front of the camera or onto the runway. Being aloof, awkward and unsure of yourself will only hinder your performance and hide any potential talent you have for the profession. You can have the perfect look for modeling but if you don't know what to do with your face and body, no one will want to dedicate the time to work with you.

...You Are Shy: "Shy" and "Model" do not belong in the same sentence. Need I say more?

Check Out Modeling Related Jobs

Not everyone can become a model--that much I'm sure you all know by now. Even though it may seem like the world has fallen apart if you have discovered this truth for yourself, there are still ways you can be involved in the industry. Oftentimes those that want to do modeling also have similar interests that relate to modeling like fashion, photography, etc. If modeling is not in the stars for you, check out these related career fields that will give you an opportunity to see how the industry works and be a main player in it--even if it's not in front of the camera or on a catwalk.

Booking Agent: Can't get signed to a modeling agency? Why not work for one! Bookers are the people responsible for organizing the go-sees, castings and shoots for the agency's models. Most bookers are assigned to work with specific models and you'll act as their go-to person. You'll be dealing directly with clients, casting directors, photographers, etc. and submitting the right people for the assignment. You can look into internship opportunities or if you meet the requirements for employment, you can get hired, get paid and be around the action on a daily basis.

Wardrobe Stylist: These are the folks in charge of shopping for the right outfits and accessories for shoots and basically play a role in dressing the models. This job is particularly ideal for people that love to shop and have a good eye for the latest fashion trends. You'll not only get paid to shop, you'll be able to work on set of photoshoots with models, photographers and the rest of the crew.

Dresser: Do you love fashion shows? Have you always wanted to be a part of the action? If you can't be on the catwalk, you can volunteer to be a dresser. As the name implies, dressers help the models backstage change in and out of their clothes. Of course if you're shy about nudity, then this isn't the right job for you. This job is usually described as "grunt" work and may not always be a paid job but it's a fun way to see what goes on behind the scenes of a fashion show. If you work well under pressure and can keep your cool even in the most hectic of situations, being a dresser may be something fun to try out.

Photographer: Some model hopefuls also have a knack for photography. Either as a hobby or a career, if you can't be in front of a camera you can always develop your skills behind it. Whether you are interested in doing fashion, glamour, lifestyle or commercial photography, you can use your creativity to the fullest.

Makeup Artist & Hair Stylist: Part of the fun of modeling is getting dolled up in hair and makeup. If you've always loved putting makeup on others and/or have a talent for creating amazing hairstyles, then you should definitely look into either or both of these jobs, which can be done part time, full time or just for fun. Shoots and other modeling assignments are constantly in need of hair stylists and makeup artists. You'll have a chance to work with models and play a part in the final images that could appear in a number of places such as magazines, catalogs, brochures and websites.

Fashion Designer: Not only will this job opportunity give you the chance to work with models and photographers, you'll get to create clothes that could end up being the next big trend in the fashion industry. With the right connections and designs your creations can be showcased at the biggest fashion shows, sold in stores or displayed in catalogs.

beloved Modeling

Hello, my beloved Modeling 101 readers! I wanted to let you know that I have not forgotten you--things have been SO busy for me lately that I have not had the time to sit down and write a thoughtful, educational and informative post--and I don't believe in doing things half-heartedly.

Here's a quick update as to what I'm up to these days that's keeping me on my toes:

* Remember my post titled "I Hate Being the Guinea Pig," where I talked about the beauty editorial gig in LA that I pretty much bombed? Well, I ended up getting a callback! Crazy, huh? So I went to LA and made the cut. Now it's the waiting game because they'll be using 12 models per month for the shoots. They also expanded the project to include not only an ad in 944 Magazine but also televised shows and other related media projects. Pretty neat.

* Finished an acting gig that I've been working on since last year. It's a 5 episode series called "True Love." It's for a language arts site that uses short films and webisodes to teach students the English language. I played a high schooler named Natalie who simply wants to find true love. It should be online in a couple of months.

* I got hired for bridal season and have been doing bridal fashion shows around Northern California. I get to model two gorgeous wedding gowns, one party dress, which is actually a ballgown and two bridesmaid dresses. I did my first show last month and I have two shows this month and two in April.

* Been running around to castings all over San Francisco. Last week I had to attend a go-see for a Corona print ad, a Nokia print ad and an audition for a dance video game. Hectic!

* I've got an online catalog shoot tomorrow for a company that sells jewelry and handbags.

* Aside from the modeling and acting, I started teaching middle school students how to draw Manga/Anime style art so I've been bogged down with creating lesson plans, getting supplies, etc. Also, I just finished painting a mural in someone's house and have to go back to add some extra stuff.

Rest assured, I plan on jumping back on here soon to add more posts. I've got some really great topics for you and I can't wait to write them! Stay tuned...

The Truth About Modeling & Education

(This post is not in reference to modeling conventions, taking modeling classes or going to school while modeling.

Modeling isn't rocket science but it isn't exactly the easiest career path to choose, either. Many new and aspiring models falsely believe that there are certain educational requirements that are needed in order to pursue modeling. To make things very clear I am going to type in all caps (sorry for the online shouting but I'm hoping this message will be crystal clear): YOU DO NOT NEED ANY TYPE OF EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS TO BECOME A MODEL!

That means you do NOT need any of the following if you want to model:

- Diploma
- Degree
- Certificate
- Other related degrees or documents

Modeling is not a 9-5 job that you apply for. The nature of this business does not call for the completion of special classes or showing a "modeling degree" or "modeling diploma." Believe it or not, I get asked by a fair amount of people about how to obtain such certification. There is none involved. The only requirements that will make or break your chances in the modeling industry include your height, your measurements, weight (to an extent--mainly if you wish to pursue fashion and runway), physical appearance, etc.

So the good news is that you can stick to high school and any college plans you might have--there is no need to devote time to searching for special modeling degrees that will somehow get your foot in the door with a top modeling agency. No such path exists. So do your homework, learn the industry, figure out where you fit in, find agencies in your area and start putting together the materials and photos they ask for. The rest is up to chance and a bit of luck!

Bridal Season: So Much Fun!

For the past month or so I've been doing bridal fashion shows. I've been having so much fun wearing the most gorgeous wedding gowns and party dresses. The model coordinator for the shows uses the same team of models so I get to work with the same people. Of course there are times when not everyone can make it to the shows so in those instances new models are recruited. It's a lot of fun once you get to know the other models and you eventually end up becoming a family unit of sorts. Two months before the first show I had to go in to the designer's shop in order to pick my dresses and get fitted. I chose two very lovely wedding gowns with long trains, one party dress and two bridesmaid dresses (one is a really pretty dress that can also double as a dress you'd wear to a fancy dinner, while the other one is the stereotypical horrid bridesmaid dress lol).

Our call time is usually between 8:30am - 9:00am and although hair and makeup is taken care of when we get there, sometimes the ratio of makeup artists and hair stylists to models is not favorable so I've since learned to bring my own makeup bag--always come prepared! We do two shows, usually the first one is at 12:30pm and the second one is at 2:30pm so we get a nice lunch break in between.

Sometimes I think that Murphy's Law was created with the modeling industry in mind. In case you aren't familiar with this particular law, it goes as follows:

"Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong."

We've had girls trip up the steps, straps break, zippers get stuck, dresses not fitting like they're supposed to, etc. If you want to learn how to think on your toes and improvise, participate in a fashion show! Case and point: at the last show I did I was jumping into my beautiful, emerald green bridesmaid dress, only to discover that the emerald gems on the front were missing and was hanging by a thread. We had no time to cut it off so I put the dress on and got in line. We had to showcase that particular dress so I had to appear on stage. With about 15 seconds to think of a solution, I strategically placed my left hand in a way that held the broken part in place but I couldn't move my hand at all or else it would come off and dangle from the threads on the right side. Sounds like a move that saved the day, right? Well, the unfortunate thing was that the emerald design was located right underneath my bustline so I ended up having to put both my hands underneath my bustline while walking instead of on my hips like you're supposed to. Even though it looked odd as heck, I worked it like that was how it was supposed to be! LOL. As soon as we walked off stage, all the models were like, "Why were you walking like that?!" Hey, better to look fierce with an odd pose instead of making the dress look bad, right?

Here are some pictures from the past shows (some were taken by pros and others were taken by people in the crowd):

The picture of the green dress is how it is supposed to look normally. See how low my hands are on my hips? Picture the same thing but with my hands up under my bustline. Yikes! Haha

Lifestyle & Mature Modeling

You may or may not have heard the term "lifestyle" and "mature" when it comes to modeling. These fields are very in demand in the industry and typically fall under the commercial/print category. As the name implies, "lifestyle" modeling describes images of models doing everyday activities. From talking on the phone to shopping, these kinds of gigs cast for men and women that are usually in their 20s, 30s and even 40s. You can think of lifestyle modeling images as a candid look into someone's life (only staged with a professional photographer and experienced models haha). Oftentimes, these kinds of projects need families and will cast for male and female lifestyle models that look like they could be parents. Of course the child and teen models are also cast to complete the rest of the family. Other projects cast for couples to do a variety of activites from walking and holding hands to cuddling and eating dinner or even checking email together.

Here are a few examples of lifestyle modeling (that's me and my male model partner, Lyndon, in the second and fourth photos, which was taken during a recent lifestyle shoot I did in San Francisco):

Although most careers for fashion models are considered "over" by the time they are in their early to mid 20s, print models are able to extend their careers because of categories like lifestyle modeling. Because it is commercial in nature, this means that these models do not necessarily have to look "young" or maintain perfect measurements. This definitely allows these kinds of models to not have to worry about their weight, which is always a plus. As long as you are proportional and healthy, you'll be good to go. Some agencies automatically consider models that are 25 or older to be lifestyle models. Of course if you happen to look younger, then that may change how your agent markets you. Nothing is exactly set in stone and does vary from model to model in some cases.

Mature modeling involves using male and female models that are in their 40s and older--this is a great market for any man or woman within this age range that has played around with the idea of pursuing modeling. Even if it's just part time or for fun, if you've got a great look and are photogenic, then mature modeling could be something worth looking into. Just as there is a demand for models in the lifestyle category based on the demographic of the average consumer, there is also a special niche market for mature models. The nature of work that accompanies mature modeling is also commercial/print related and these images frequently appear on stock photography sites, in catalogs, brochures, advertisements and on packaging labels for certain products.

Here are some images of mature models:

Why Agency Kickbacks are a No-No

For the record: the only way modeling agencies are able to make money legally is by taking a commission out of each gig they book for their models. This is why I repeatedly state why it is important that you avoid agencies that require any type of upfront payment before offering you a contract. However, this has not stopped some agencies (even the legitimate ones for the most part), from doing stuff under the table or in a way that won't get them in trouble. Agency kickbacks are one of them.

Here's how a typical kickback works:

Step 1: The agency signs a new model with no upfront fees or other funny stuff. Harmless enough.
Step 2: They tell the model that she/he must organize photoshoots in order to build their portfolio. The agency will give the model a list of recommended photographers that they encourage the model to work with.
Step 3: The model works with one of the agency's recommended photographers and pays for the cost of the shoot, makeup artist, stylist, comp card printing, etc.
Step 4: The photographer gives a percentage of their cut to the agency.

Step 4 is the "kickback" part and is a big no-no. The agency should not be receiving any money when it comes to the portfolio stage--the only time they should see profit is once they book their model work and are able to charge their agency fee/commission. Some agencies have done kickbacks under the table as a way to generate additional income but this is not good business practice. Does it stop agencies from doing it? No.

Those within the industry usually know which agencies do these kickbacks, although it is difficult to find out for yourself. Even if you asked the agency and/or the photographer whether they deal with kickbacks, what's to stop them from lying to you? The point of this post is not to figure out how to track down the truth--that's a huge challenge that I wouldn't even know where to begin talking about. I simply want you to be aware of the fact that when it comes to paying for your portfolio shoot when signing with an agency, it's okay if you pay as long as the agency isn't getting a cut from it. When you sign with an agency, find out all your options for choosing photographers. The agency should not force you to use one of the photographers they recommend. They should be open to allowing you to choose who you want and deciding whether to accept the images that you get as a result.

Dealing with Aspiring Models

(This post is for parents of underage models--age 17 and younger.)

Hearing the phrase, "I want to model" is perhaps one of the few things that any parent wants to hear. However, completely shooting down your child's dream is not the best approach. I'll admit, I am not parent but just because I don't have kids of my own does not mean that I can't empathize with what you're going through. If your son or daughter has expressed interest in becoming a model, I think you'll find the following tips helpful.

Listen. As a parent your first instinct may be to react to what your child has just said. However, instead of diving right into a lecture, simply give your child a chance to explain. Trust me, the world is not going to end and your son/daughter isn't going to wind up a loser because they are interested in modeling. Listen to what he/she has to say and then take a moment to think about how you're going to respond.

Negativity Isn't Necessary. Saying "no" is one thing but going into a full-on tirade about how stupid it is to want to be a model and how there is no chance he/she will make it will only make matters worse--not to mention really hurt your child's feelings. Put downs are not right, nor appropriate. If you already know that you do not feel this is right for your child, simply explain your concerns and have valid reasons for why you feel the way you do. Parents tend to think they don't owe explanations to their children but you do have to realize that they are human beings and deserved to be talked to with respect. Even if the answer is not what they want to hear, telling them "no" the right way will be something they will appreciate--even if it isn't right away.

Test Your Child. Modeling is an industry that has a lot of twists and turns. It is not only important that you as a parent know how things work, your child should, too. If your son/daughter is really serious about becoming a model then they should have some form of research or knowledge to offer you about the topic. Ask them what kind of modeling they want to do, whether they plan on modeling part time or full time, whether modeling is going to be a hobby/for fun or if it could grow to become something more, etc. Also ask how they plan on balancing school with modeling. If you are met with blank stares and/or a lot of "umms" and "uhhhs" then tell them they have not put enough thought into this endeavor and to go back and do research. When they have gained sufficient knowledge, then they can come back and resume the discussion with you.

Think It Over. The thought of having your child strutting down a runway, posing in front of cameras, running in and out of castings and go-sees may not be a great thing in your mind but try not to make a snap decision right after your child brings up the topic. After listening to their explanation, ask for some time to think about it. It can be days or a few weeks, whatever amount of time is needed for you to grasp the idea and decide whether it is actually worth looking into. Do research yourself about the industry. Visit modeling agency websites and see what they look for. The more you know the easier it will be for you to make a decision. It's easy to shoot down an idea, but it doesn't reflect that well on you if you turn down something you don't even know anything about.

Be Prepared. If you support your child's decision to get into modeling, then kudos to you! However, being the parent of an underage model is going to involve work on your end. Agencies, clients and photographers require a parent/guardian to be present at all times--at the agency, during castings and go-sees, photoshoots, etc. You'll have to plan accordingly for this and figure out how much time you can devote to driving your child to and from gigs as well as possibly having to travel with your child.

Be Supportive No Matter What. Don't think your child is ready for modeling? You are totally within your rights as a parent to call the shots. However, it is important to understand that your child will be devastated and the sting may not go away overnight. Instead of being negative about it, be supportive and calmly let your child know that maybe modeling could be a possibility a few years from now or when they turn 18 when the decision will legally be theirs to make. On the flip side if you let your child model, be prepared to be their support system when they get rejected from agencies or from clients--it's going to happen. Even if you are not completely comfortable with your child modeling, offering that bit of support when they are down will keep them positively motivated. You don't have to agree with them modeling but it doesn't hurt to show that you'll be there for them no matter what happens. "I told you so" shouldn't be in your vocabulary if you really want to be a supportive parent.

Hat Fashions

While visiting your bounded hat boutique you are apprenticed to see abounding hat styles that you are blind of. Fashions and styles are consistently changing; about some assume to break about forever. Here's a quick analysis of some of the latest hat fashions as able-bodied as some old favorites.

The cowboy hat is one of the all time favorites, and it's not aloof for ranchers either. Abounding bodies who adulation country & western styles and music additionally adulation to abrasion the cowboy hat. Different Types of Promotional Modeling

There are a variety of sub-categories in the modeling industry, including promotional modeling. While not known as the most interesting or credible part of the modeling world, this has not stopped many men and women from seeking work in this field. If you enjoy meeting new people, are great at selling a product or idea and want to experience something different, then you should give promotional modeling a shot. For general information about this type of modeling, check out my blog post on the subject:

Promotional/Tradeshow Modeling

There are even sub-categories in promotional modeling, such as regular promo modeling, retail modeling and brand ambassador/spokesmodeling.

Regular promotional modeling involves handing out promotional/marketing materials and free samples to customers as well as educating people about the company you are representing. This usually takes place at tradeshows, conventions and other related venues. For that event you are the face of the company and are responsible for drawing interested customers to the booth or stand.

Retail modeling is very similar to promo modeling but takes place in actual retail stores. For example, you might get a retail modeling gig passing out makeup samples to women in the cosmetics section of Macy's or handing out samples of hair conditioner products at Wal-Mart. Or you could even participate in playing video games for a new title coming out at a local game store. The possibilities are endless for retail modeling.

Brand ambassadors can be thought of as "managers" that oversee as well as participate in a promotional event. As the name implies, brand ambassadors represent a particular brand/company and must be very knowledgeable in that brand's identity, services and products. You'll commonly see this term used in relation to models promoting alcohol. Most brand ambassadors are 21 years of age or older due to the nature of the products they are promoting. Promo models in this position typically get paid well and are hired for future events for the brand they are representing.

Spokesmodels are chosen to represent a certain image that customers associate with a particular company or product. They are typically asked to appear at a certain company's events throughout the year. So instead of just working one or two events, they may sign you on to make special appearances, which could also result in higher pay. By seeing a regular face, customers will come to establish the connection between your appearance and the presence of the company. Being a spokesmodel is a great position that could lead to future opportunities including being a part of the company's ad campaigns.
